🩸 Behind the Scenes: Writing Millbridge’s Vampires

When I started writing Everything I Learned About Vampires From Watching Dracula Was Wrong, I wanted to play with the gap between what horror films teach us… and what real monsters might do if they walked our streets. Trey, Jude, and Blake live in a world where the rules don’t come from Van Helsing’s handbook—they come from trial, terror, and mistakes that cost more than garlic and holy water can fix.

One of the joys (and challenges) of this book was blending classic vampire atmosphere with the gritty realities of a small town. I dug into sermons, local folklore, and that uneasy feeling you get walking past an old church at night, then twisted those into something that feels both familiar and unnervingly new.

Characters like Jude—the preacher hiding more than just secrets of faith—and Blake, a cop drowning his fears in alcohol, grew into people who carry the story’s weight in deeply human ways. They’re not perfect heroes, but they’re the ones you’d want in your corner when the shadows start moving.

Millbridge itself became a character too: its abandoned houses, echoing church halls, and half-forgotten history set the stage for a vampire story that refuses to play by Hollywood’s rules.

Q: Your books are packed with strange creatures, eerie towns, and unsettling twists. Where do your ideas come from?
A: Ideas rarely show up fully formed—they arrive as whispers, images, or what-if questions. Sometimes it’s a memory of a place (like walking past a crumbling church at dusk), sometimes it’s a line from an old horror film that makes me wonder: what if the rules were different?

For Everything I Learned About Vampires From Watching Dracula Was Wrong, it started with a question: What if the movies lied to us? What if the rules we thought would save us—garlic, crosses, holy water—were useless against the real thing? That spark turned into Millbridge, a town full of shadows, secrets, and characters trying to survive against creatures they never truly understood.

I also keep notebooks full of snippets—dreams, newspaper clippings, odd conversations overheard. A single phrase can turn into a scene. A half-drawn sketch might become a monster. Over time, these fragments weave together into the worlds you see in my books.

Q: So what fuels the horror?
A: Curiosity. I’m always chasing the question that makes me uneasy, because if it unsettles me, I know it’ll unsettle readers too.
